NASA says bus-sized asteroid will pass Earth by a close margin today; Know how fast it is travelling

NASA has identified four asteroids that will pass Earth by a close margin today, March 8, using its advanced telescopes. These asteroids, although on regular orbits around the Sun, can approach the Earth due to gravitational interactions with large planets. The closest approach is expected to be by Asteroid 2024 EJ2, which will come within 558,000 kilometers of our planet.

Asteroid 2024 EJ2 is traveling at a speed of 53,289 kilometers per hour, faster than Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. While the asteroid is 61 feet wide, similar in size to a house, it is not large enough to cause significant damage upon impact. However, it serves as a reminder of the potential threat posed by asteroids, as seen with the 2013 Chelyabinsk incident.

This particular asteroid is a member of the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, named after the 1862 Apollo asteroid. NASA has confirmed that this will be the first close approach of Asteroid 2024 EJ2, and no future encounters are predicted in the near term.

Monitoring these asteroids is crucial to understanding their movement and potential impact on Earth. While today’s pass is not cause for alarm, it highlights the importance of continued observation and tracking of near-Earth objects to ensure the safety of our planet.
