iOS 17.4 brings sweeping changes including revamped App Store policies and NFC access

Apple has rolled out the highly-anticipated iOS 17.4 update, focusing on significant changes tailored for users in Europe. The update introduces various enhancements worldwide but primarily aims to comply with the Digital Markets Act and cater to the European Union.

In adherence to the Digital Markets Act, Apple is revamping the App Store landscape in the European Union. Developers within the EU now have the option to choose alternative app stores or distribute their apps through alternate channels, with a new fee structure in place. Users can now designate their preferred alternative app store as the default, introducing flexibility in app acquisition and enhanced security measures to combat malware-infected apps.

The update also liberalizes payment methods within apps, allowing developers to use alternative payment systems without mandating in-app purchases. Developers leveraging alternative payment solutions receive a fee reduction, and apps distributed through alternative platforms incur minimal charges.

Furthermore, EU users gain the freedom to choose their default browser from a selection of popular options in Safari. Additionally, third-party payment apps and banks within the European Economic Area now have access to NFC, enabling direct contactless payments via iPhone.

The iOS 17.4 update also reverses limitations on Progressive Web Apps within the EU, introduces new emoji characters, enhances the Messaging with Siri feature, and improves functionality in the Podcasts and Music apps. These updates collectively enhance the iOS ecosystem and reflect Apple’s commitment to regulatory compliance and user satisfaction globally.
