Google's new initiative aims to forecast floods in India using AI: Here's how

In a groundbreaking collaboration between Google and Apollo Hospitals, the focus is on harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) for early disease detection in India. Now, Google researchers have shifted their attention towards flood prediction. This shift is detailed in a recent research paper published in Nature, highlighting how AI can revolutionize flood forecasting and potentially save countless lives, as reported by HT Tech.

Utilizing machine learning (ML) techniques, Google researchers have developed hydrological simulation models that can predict floods with unprecedented accuracy. These models, based on the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) version 4, outperform traditional river prediction methods, offering earlier and more precise predictions.

Yossi Matias, VP of Engineering and Research at Google, along with Grey Nearing, Research Scientist, stressed the significance of this flood forecasting initiative within Google’s Adaptation and Resilience efforts. Their focus is on combating climate change and enhancing global resilience, with AI and ML playing a pivotal role in driving scientific progress for climate action.

The AI model deployed in the study uses long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to predict daily streamflow across a 7-day forecast horizon. Trained on data from 5680 streamflow gauges, this model powers the Flood Hub system, delivering river predictions for 80 countries up to seven days in advance.

Through relentless innovation over a multi-year journey, Google researchers have not only advanced scientific understanding but have also operationalized their findings into a real-time flood forecasting system. This system provides alerts via Google Search, Maps, Android notifications, and the Flood Hub platform, ensuring timely warnings and enabling global communities to better prepare for and mitigate the impact of floods.
