OpenAI’s Video-Making Service Under Data Privacy Scrutiny in EU

Italy’s data protection watchdog is turning its attention towards OpenAI once again, this time over concerns related to the firm’s new artificial intelligence video creation system. The Italian regulator is investigating possible data violations by OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool, and now wants information about the new AI service, Sora, which can create videos up to a minute in length.

The Italian regulator has given OpenAI 20 days to provide information about the Sora service and its potential implications on the processing of users’ personal data in the European Union, particularly in Italy. The regulator is also inquiring about the availability of the new AI model to the public and whether it will be offered to users in the EU, specifically in Italy.

San Francisco-based OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, recently launched an online store allowing people to share customized versions of the ChatGPT chatbot. The store, called the GPT Store, will feature chatbots created by users for various tasks such as teaching math or creating cocktail recipes. Users can eventually monetize their creations through the store.

OpenAI’s GPT Store is similar to app stores like Apple’s or Google’s, allowing users to see popular and trending chatbots, as well as search by category. Additionally, OpenAI announced a new paid ChatGPT tier for companies with smaller teams, starting at $25 per month per user.

As OpenAI expands its ecosystem of services and revenue streams, the scrutiny from Italy’s data protection watchdog adds to the regulatory challenges the firm is facing in relation to its AI technologies.
