Apple announces big investment plans in clean energy; partners with CleanMax in India

Apple has announced its investment plans to expand its clean energy footprint worldwide as part of the ‘Apple 2030’ initiative, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2030. With more than 18 gigawatts of clean electricity powering its operations, Apple is focusing on increasing its investments in solar power in the US and Europe.

In India, Apple has entered into a joint venture with CleanMax to invest in a portfolio of six rooftop solar projects with a total capacity of 14.4 megawatts. This additional capacity will help power Apple’s offices, two retail stores, and other operations in the country. Apple first achieved 100 percent renewable energy for its global corporate operations in 2018, showcasing its commitment to sustainable practices.

Furthermore, Apple is working towards its goal of replenishing 100 percent of the freshwater used in corporate operations in high-stress locations by 2030. Initiating water replenishment work in states like Telangana and Maharashtra, Apple has already made significant progress in India through its ongoing partnership with Uptime Catalyst Facility, providing clean drinking water to communities through water kiosks run by local entrepreneurs.

In addition to these efforts, Apple is committed to smart water stewardship, with its data center in Prineville, Oregon, becoming the first-ever data center certified to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) International Water Stewardship Standard. The company has also supported multiple supplier sites in achieving certification and provided water stewardship training in countries like India and China.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, emphasizes the importance of clean energy and water as essential components for a responsible business. Apple is dedicated to achieving its climate goals while working towards transforming electrical grids and restoring watersheds for a cleaner future for all.
