John Sterling honored by Yankees for 36 seasons and 5,631 games as radio voice

After 36 seasons as the voice of the New York Yankees, John Sterling needed just 90 seconds to say goodbye. Sterling, the 85-year-old broadcaster, was honored with an on-field ceremony before Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay, following his announcement of retirement 2 1/2 weeks into the season. Flanked by his family, Sterling received gifts and addressed the sellout crowd of 47,629, thanking them for their kindness and support over the years. The ceremony also featured Bleacher Creatures chanting his name during the first-inning Roll Call.

During a news conference before the ceremony, Sterling explained his decision to retire, citing fatigue and a desire to step away from the daily grind of broadcasting. His unusual timing of retirement came down to simply feeling “really tired,” as he reflected on his long career and the countless games he’s called for the Yankees.

Sterling’s iconic home run calls were highlighted, including favorites like “A-bomb from A-Rod” and “Robbie Cano, don’t you know.” Having called 5,420 regular-season games and 211 postseason games, Sterling shared his memories and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to do what he loves for so many years.

The ceremony was filled with tributes from former players and colleagues, as well as special gifts and acknowledgments of Sterling’s lasting impact on the Yankees organization and the game of baseball. As he walked back to the Yankees dugout to the tune of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” Sterling reflected on his lifelong dream of becoming a broadcaster and the influence of his predecessors in the industry.

With the possibility of being honored in Monument Park alongside other Yankees legends, Sterling remains humble and grateful for the opportunity to have shared his passion for the game with fans for over three decades. His legacy as the voice of the Yankees will always be remembered and cherished by players, fans, and colleagues alike.
