Tampa Bay Rays' Wander Franco charged with sexually abusing a minor

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was charged with sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic, as confirmed by prosecutors on Tuesday. The charges were brought after the initial deadline expired and six months after a judge ordered an investigation into the alleged abuse.

The prosecutors presented the formal accusations before a judge, indicating that Franco paid the girl’s mother thousands of dollars to consent to the relationship, which lasted four months. The minor’s mother is also included in the indictment and remains under house arrest.

Major League Baseball has placed Franco on administrative leave until July 14 as they continue to investigate the allegations. The leave is not considered disciplinary, and Franco continues to be paid his $2 million salary. He has not played since August 12, 2023, and has stayed in the Dominican Republic during the investigation.

The details of the case are still being investigated by authorities in the Dominican Republic, with the player’s association monitoring the situation closely. The Associated Press reported on the developments in this ongoing case involving the highly-talented young shortstop.
