49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reportedly called Bill Belichick about DC opening

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was in talks with the San Francisco 49ers for a potential coaching position, but ultimately, nothing came to fruition. After parting ways with the Patriots in February, Belichick was left without a coaching job for the first time in decades.

The 49ers, fresh off a Super Bowl loss, fired their former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and reportedly reached out to Belichick to offer him the position. However, the discussions did not progress, and the team ended up promoting passing game specialist Nick Sorensen to the role instead.

Before settling on Sorensen, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan also considered Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for the job. However, the Chiefs ensured Spagnuolo’s stay by offering him a new contract following their recent Super Bowl victory over the Niners.

Now, with Sorensen officially taking on the defensive coordinator role, Belichick remains without a coaching job. Speculation surrounds what the highly experienced coach will do next, with some hinting at a potential venture into media. As the football world awaits Belichick’s next move, his son Steve has recently been hired as the defensive coordinator for the University of Washington, adding another layer of intrigue to the Belichick family’s football legacy.
