UnitedHealth says online platform fully functional after Change Healthcare hack, ET HealthWorld

UnitedHealth Group has announced that its electronic prescribing for pharmacy services is now fully operational, including claims submission and payment transmission, following a cyber attack on its tech unit Change Healthcare that disrupted services. The company stated that electronic payment functionality for its payments platform will be available for connection on March 15, with testing and reestablishment of connectivity to its medical claims network and software expected to begin on March 18.

The cyberattack, which occurred on February 21 at Change Healthcare, was carried out by hackers identifying themselves as the “Blackcat” ransomware group. This attack had a cascading impact on various players within the U.S. healthcare system, leading to disruptions in electronic pharmacy refills and insurance transactions. Change Healthcare plays a critical role in the complex U.S. insurance claims system, connecting providers not only to UnitedHealth but also to other major healthcare entities like CVS Health’s Aetna, Elevance, and Humana.

The repercussions of the cyberattack have highlighted vulnerabilities in the healthcare industry’s reliance on digital systems for key processes. UnitedHealth Group’s efforts to restore full functionality and connectivity underscore the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard critical healthcare infrastructure. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats faced by organizations in the digital age and the need for proactive measures to mitigate cyber risks in the healthcare sector.
