Many individuals with type 2 diabetes lack potentially life-saving information regarding their illness, ET HealthWorld

In a recent study published in Frontiers in Public Health, researchers in Portugal found that a significant number of patients with type 2 diabetes lack crucial knowledge about their condition. The study aimed to address the existing disparity in diabetes knowledge among patients to improve disease management.

The research included 1,200 diabetic patients, with over 40% being treated with insulin. The participants were tested on various aspects of diabetes knowledge, such as diet, signs and symptoms, medication control, and the impact of physical activity. While many participants showed good knowledge in certain areas, such as food-related questions and the benefits of physical activity, there were significant gaps in knowledge in other areas.

Only 12.8% of participants correctly identified which food item should not be used to treat low blood sugar levels, and only 4.4% knew the symptoms of ketoacidosis, a severe complication of type 2 diabetes. The researchers attributed the disparities in knowledge to the communication practices of healthcare professionals and the prioritization of specific areas when informing patients.

Factors such as the use of medication, age, education level, living arrangements, and dietary habits were found to impact diabetes knowledge. The researchers emphasized the importance of improving knowledge about blood sugar monitoring to prevent complications associated with high blood sugar levels.

Overall, the study highlights the need for better communication and education strategies for patients with type 2 diabetes. By addressing knowledge gaps and empowering patients with essential information, healthcare professionals can enhance disease management and improve patient outcomes.
