Tripura Government issues clarification on HIV Outbreak, Health News, ET HealthWorld

In response to recent media reports claiming a possible HIV epidemic in Tripura, the state government issued a rejoinder clarifying the miscommunication between the state drug society and the media. The reports stated that Tripura has 828 students registered as HIV positive, with 47 of them having died.

The state AIDS control body clarified that the data mentioned in the media reports is from April 2004 to May 2024, and the 828 students registered at ART centers in Tripura are cumulative figures from each respective year. The state health department labeled such reports as misleading, addressing a post on social media platform X.

The issue arose from a media workshop organized by the Tripura Journalist Union, Web Media Forum, and TSACS, where it was claimed that 828 students in Tripura are HIV positive, with 572 still alive and 47 succumbing to the infection. TSACS also admitted to 1790 new cases with a 0.92% positivity rate in 2023-24, compared to 1847 new cases with a 0.89% positivity rate in 2022-23.

These clarifications come in light of the confusion caused by the initial reports, emphasizing the importance of accurate communication and reporting in sensitive matters like public health. The Tripura government aims to address any misinformation and provide the public with accurate information regarding the current situation of HIV in the state.
