Top Indian court blasts drugs regulator for not acting against yoga guru's medical firm, ET HealthWorld

In London, India’s top court criticized the head of a state drugs regulator for not taking action against a popular yoga guru’s company, which claimed its traditional ayurvedic medicines could cure chronic illnesses like diabetes and asthma. The Supreme Court reprimanded the state drugs department on Wednesday for shirking responsibility despite being notified in 2018 about advertisements by Divya Pharmacy, a unit of Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved.

Ramdev, accompanied by Mithilesh Kumar, the head of Uttarakhand state drugs regulator, appeared at the contempt case hearing against Patanjali for disregarding court directives to cease publishing the ads. Kumar requested more time to act against the company, a plea the judges denied. Justice Hima Kohli questioned the state counsel, emphasizing the lack of action taken by the state licensing authority.

Despite being one of India’s prominent yoga gurus, offering ayurvedic remedies on his TV shows, Ramdev and his company faced criticism for flouting court orders. The judges expressed dissatisfaction with the regulator’s sluggish response even after issuing a warning to the firm. The bench rejected a second apology from Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, setting April 16 for the next hearing.

Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved, known for its natural remedies, faced legal scrutiny for disregarding court directives and making unverified claims about curing chronic diseases through their products. The court’s strict stance and refusal to accept apologies highlight the importance of adhering to regulations in the pharmaceutical sector.
