“Significance of Early Detection in Enhancing Breast Cancer Prognosis” – ET HealthWorld
The Indian Council of Medical Research recently conducted a study which found that more women are being diagnosed with cancer than men, with an increase in breast cancer cases. In India, about 1.38 million new breast cancer cases are detected each year, resulting in approximately 458,000 deaths due to late diagnosis or recurrence.
One of the primary challenges in the timely treatment of breast cancer is delayed diagnosis, with about 59% of women in India being diagnosed when the condition has already spread outside the breast to nearby lymph nodes. To reduce mortality, it is crucial to identify the early signs of breast cancer, such as palpable lumps, changes in breast size, shape, or skin texture, and sudden inversion or discharge.
There is an emerging trend in personalized screening for the early detection of breast cancer, which aims to provide tailored approaches for each patient based on their individual risk factors beyond the typical family history. This approach enables patients and their medical providers to commence the right treatment in a timely manner, ultimately leading to better outcomes, survival, and quality of life.
The treatment landscape for breast cancer has seen remarkable advancements with options such as surgery, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Immunotherapy, in particular, has shown efficacy in treating advanced forms of breast cancer, improving quality of life and mortality. Additionally, newer therapies such as endocrine therapy offer hope in preventing relapse and recurrence of breast cancer.
With the high incidence of breast cancer in Indian women and the potential for recurrence, there is a crucial need for targeted screening and treatment. Emerging technologies may better shape our understanding of women at a higher risk of being diagnosed with the condition. When combined with robust treatment options, these technologies may revolutionize cancer care, leading to improved rates of recurrence and mortality and better quality of life for women.
