Novo Nordisk collaborates with global authorities to address counterfeit Ozempic products, ET HealthWorld reports
In a recent report by Reuters, Novo Nordisk’s CEO, Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen, has expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of counterfeit versions of their popular diabetes drug, Ozempic, across multiple countries. The company is currently collaborating with authorities in various countries to address the issue. It has been revealed that counterfeit Ozempic has been discovered in as many as 16 countries to date, raising alarms about unregulated and fake medicines entering the market.
Reports obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests show instances where patients in Belgium, Iraq, Serbia, and Switzerland were harmed after consuming fake Ozempic. These reports highlight the dangers associated with counterfeit drugs, with patients experiencing life-threatening drops in blood sugar levels after taking suspected or confirmed fake versions of the medication. The World Health Organization has linked global shortages of Ozempic and similar drugs to the rise in suspected counterfeits.
Furthermore, Novo Nordisk’s investigations uncovered instances where insulin pens were relabeled as Ozempic, indicating a broader issue of counterfeit drugs in the pharmaceutical supply chain. The escalating demand for Novo’s drugs that aid weight loss has exacerbated concerns about the proliferation of counterfeit medications in the market. Jorgensen also addressed the serious health risks posed by compounded semaglutide in the United States, highlighting the need for stringent regulations and oversight in the pharmaceutical industry.
Overall, the discovery of counterfeit Ozempic in multiple countries underscores the need for increased vigilance and regulatory measures to safeguard patients from the harmful effects of fake medications. Novo Nordisk’s proactive approach to collaborating with authorities and monitoring suspect products is vital in ensuring the safety and efficacy of their pharmaceutical products.
