IIT Madras Introduces NeoStand, a Tailor-Made Electric Standing Wheelchair for Enhanced Mobility, as reported by ET HealthWorld
In a groundbreaking development, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has unveiled ‘NeoStand,’ India’s most customizable electric standing wheelchair. The launch took place at the IIT Madras campus and was attended by Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, along with other dignitaries and supporters of the project. The ‘NeoStand’ revolutionizes the wheelchair experience by allowing wheelchair users to effortlessly transition from sitting to standing at the touch of a button, enhancing their independence and quality of life.
Led by Prof Sujatha Srinivasan, the Head of TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT Madras, the development of ‘NeoStand’ marks a significant milestone in assistive technology. The wheelchair is designed to provide users with the freedom to stand comfortably when needed, reducing the risk of secondary health complications. Its compactness ensures easy maneuverability through tight spaces, making it highly accessible for users.
For wheelchair users, the ability to stand is crucial for better blood circulation, digestion, and overall well-being. However, many users are often dependent on external assistance or orthoses for standing. The ‘NeoStand’ aims to address this challenge and provide users with a user-centric and innovative solution to improve their daily lives and social participation.
The project was made possible through a collaborative effort involving Tata Elxsi, the TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2), and NeoMotion, an IIT Madras-incubated start-up. The development of ‘NeoStand’ underscores the commitment of the team at IIT Madras to enhance the independence and health of wheelchair users, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and empowerment for individuals with mobility challenges.
The launch of ‘NeoStand’ signifies a significant milestone in the field of assistive technology, providing users with a groundbreaking device that combines health benefits, functionality, and psychological well-being. The user-centric design of ‘NeoStand’ highlights the team’s dedication to improving the lives of wheelchair users and promoting inclusivity in society.
