No ulterior motive behind linking CGHS IDs to ABHA: Health ministry, ET HealthWorld

In a recent statement, the health ministry clarified that there is no hidden agenda behind linking Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) beneficiary IDs to Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) numbers. The ministry emphasized that ABHA is not connected to any financial scheme of the government but is instead a unique health ID based on Aadhaar. The move aims to streamline health records and improve accessibility for CGHS beneficiaries.

The need for ABHA arose due to the inability to store Aadhaar details on systems without advanced security measures. ABHA serves as a proxy for Aadhaar specifically in the healthcare sector. The government assured that there are no ulterior motives behind this initiative and it will eventually be applicable to all Indian citizens across healthcare facilities.

This integration of ABHA with CGHS records will enable beneficiaries to access their health records on mobile devices, reducing the need for redundant medical tests. The ministry confirmed that ABHA implementation is underway in various health programs and screenings, including Char Dham Yatra, Maha-Kumbh screening, UPSC medical examinations, and more.

Furthermore, the health ministry has extended the deadline for linking ABHA numbers with CGHS IDs by 120 days starting from June 30, 2024. Kiosks will be set up at wellness centers to assist CGHS beneficiaries in this process. The creation of ABHA numbers has also been granted an extension of 90 days from the same date, as per an office memorandum released by the ministry.

Overall, the government’s objective with the ABHA initiative is to enhance healthcare efficiency and provide seamless access to health records for beneficiaries.
