Mizoram has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country, with 0.23 out of 1,000 people being infected, according to the report of HIV Estimation, 2023. State health and family welfare minister Lalrinpuii disclosed this information to the assembly on Friday. She mentioned that as per the report, Mizoram has the highest adult prevalence among the age group of 15 to 49 years, standing at 2.32 percent.

In response to a query from BJP member K Beichhua, Lalrinpuii highlighted that the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) does not provide information on HIV/AIDS states, aside from the HIV Estimation data. Therefore, it is challenging to obtain data on positivity rates of other states.

Furthermore, the minister revealed that cancer remains the primary cause of death among non-communicable diseases in Mizoram. In the year 2022-2023, a total of 374 individuals, including 147 women, succumbed to various forms of cancer. Cerebrovascular disease ranked as the second leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases, claiming the lives of 186 individuals, followed by hypertensive disease which caused 111 deaths during the same period.

The report sheds light on the alarming situation of HIV/AIDS prevalence in Mizoram, urging authorities to take necessary steps to address and combat the disease effectively amidst other health challenges faced by the state.
