New AI model diagnoses diseases by drawing visual maps, ET HealthWorld

In a groundbreaking development, scientists have introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that can accurately identify tumors and diseases in medical images while providing a visual map to explain each diagnosis. The transparency of this model, detailed in the journal IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, enables doctors to easily follow the reasoning behind the AI’s decisions, double-check for accuracy, and effectively communicate results to patients.

The AI model, created by researchers at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology in the US, aims to facilitate early detection of cancer and diseases by providing a clear roadmap of its decision-making process. By streamlining the diagnosis process, the model not only benefits healthcare professionals but also improves the overall experience for patients.

With a scarcity of doctors in many developing countries and a growing number of patients in need of medical attention, AI can serve as a valuable tool in assisting with medical image screening. While the AI model is not meant to replace the expertise of doctors, it can efficiently pre-scan images to highlight any abnormalities, such as tumors or early signs of disease, for further examination.

By training the model on three different disease diagnosis tasks using over 20,000 images, the researchers were able to achieve high accuracy rates in flagging early signs of tumors, identifying retinal conditions, and detecting heart enlargement. The model’s deep neural network, designed to mimic human decision-making processes, contributed to its success in interpreting medical images effectively.

Overall, the introduction of this new AI model marks a significant advancement in the field of medical imaging, paving the way for more efficient and accurate diagnoses in healthcare settings worldwide.
