Farmers to hold rail roko agitation for 4 hours on Sunday

Farmer unions have declared a “rail roko” protest for four hours starting from Sunday noon. This protest will take place across the country, but is not expected to affect train services outside of Punjab. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha released a detailed plan for the protest at railway stations and other locations where railway lines pass through.

At a press conference in Chandigarh, the focus of the farmer unions was on Food Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent statement regarding the Centre’s proposed formula for the protesting farmers. They criticized the government for proposing minimum support prices (MSP) on some crops, which they deemed misleading. The unions rejected this proposal as it did not align with their main demands, stating that the government only intended to provide MSP for five years, akin to contract farming.

A farmer leader, Amarjeet Singh Mohri, accused the local police of preventing farmers from different states from protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. He promised to fight against the Haryana government, which the farmers claim is hindering their progress. The rail roko protest, endorsed by the SKM and KMM, has garnered support from five other farmer unions in Punjab.

Notably, the farmers are demanding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendation to set MSPs at 50 per cent above comprehensive production costs. They are also advocating for a law guaranteeing the purchase of crops at MSP, along with other provisions such as unconditional pensions for elderly farmers and complete debt relief.
