Differences between women and men investors: Three key distinctions

Three ways in which women investors are different from men

The Indian stock market is witnessing a significant increase in women investors, with 60% of women now actively participating in trading and 68% saving for retirement, according to Fidelity’s 2023 global survey. Younger women, particularly those from Generation Z and millennials, are leading the charge with participation rates of 71% and 63%, respectively. Despite these strides, men still dominate the market, holding over 84% of traders in the equity F&O segment in both FY21 and FY22.

Women have been excelling in investment due to their ability to control emotions, make informed decisions, and avoid impulsive choices driven by short-term market changes. However, there is still a perception that trading is less suitable for women, leading to their lower participation in the trading sector.

As a stock market analyst and Chief Operating Officer at Tradejini, Trivesh D highlights the need to encourage more women to take an active role in trading and investing. He emphasizes the importance of financial literacy programs, creating an inclusive environment in financial institutions, providing mentorship opportunities, and showcasing the achievements of women in trading and investing.

While women’s natural strength lies in saving, investing is crucial for achieving financial goals in the long run and outpacing inflation. It is essential to empower and support women in their financial journey, encourage them to set financial goals, involve them in financial decisions, and provide the necessary education and resources to build confidence in trading and investing.

Ultimately, trading and investing are open to everyone, and women should not let their gender hold them back from exploring opportunities in the financial markets. By leveraging their abilities to remain calm, prepare thoroughly, and take a disciplined approach, women can excel in both long-term investing and short-term trading.
