Chinese company introduces ‘unhappy leaves’: ‘Not happy, don't come to work please'

In an effort to prioritize work-life balance, China retail tycoon Yu Donglai has introduced a unique policy called “unhappy leave” for employees. Under this policy, employees can request an additional 10 days of leave if they are feeling unhappy and are encouraged not to come to work during those times. This move aims to give employees the freedom to prioritize their mental health and well-being.

Additionally, the company’s employment policy mandates that employees work only seven hours a day, have weekends off, and are entitled to 30 to 40 days of annual leave, along with five days off during the Lunar New Year. Yu Donglai emphasized the importance of ensuring a healthy and relaxed life for employees, stating that the company values their well-being above all else.

The company also introduced a job-level certification system, where even janitors can earn up to 500,000 yuan annually based on their professional capabilities. This unique approach to employee satisfaction and well-being has garnered support from users on Chinese social media platforms, with many praising the company culture and expressing a desire to work for such an employer.

According to a 2021 survey on workplace anxiety in China, over 65% of employees feel tired and unhappy at work. Yu Donglai has criticized the culture of Chinese bosses advocating for long working hours, stating that forcing staff to work overtime is unethical and hinders their personal growth opportunities. This forward-thinking approach towards employee welfare highlights the importance of mental health and well-being in the workplace.
