Jaguar Land Rover cars to be build at Tata Motor's new Tamil Nadu plant: Reports

Tata Motors is reportedly set to invest in a new $1 billion plant in Tamil Nadu to manufacture luxury cars under the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) brand, as per a report by Reuters. The company had previously announced its plans for a new plant in March, although specific details on the models to be produced remain unknown.

The collaboration between Tata Motors and JLR goes beyond the manufacturing plant, as the companies have previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the licensing of JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. This platform will be utilized for Tata’s upcoming electric vehicles, with the first model expected to be unveiled by late 2024.

JLR’s EMA platform, introduced in 2021, will serve as the foundation for the next-generation Velar, Evoque, and Discovery Sport models. The platform is designed to accommodate advanced driver assistance systems, extensive cloud connectivity, and communication with other cars and infrastructure. Furthermore, it is engineered around the battery, featuring provisions for Software Over The Air (SOTA), Level 2+ autonomy, and ultrafast charging technologies.

In a separate report, it is stated that JLR is exploring partnerships with Chinese automaker Chery for electric vehicle platforms. Jaguar is expected to be the first brand to adopt Exeed’s battery-electric platform, with speculations suggesting the debut of the initial model based on this platform could occur in the latter half of 2024.

FY24 saw JLR’s impressive performance in India, with an 81 percent increase in retail sales reaching 4,436 units. This growth marks one of the company’s best performances in the Indian market since its launch in 2009 and the highest in the past five years. Notably, sales of SUVs including the Range Rover and Defender, along with the newly launched 2024 model year of the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, witnessed significant year-on-year increases.
