Is Toyota Fortuner introducing mild hybrid technology? Find out if it will be available in India.

Toyota Fortuner gets mild hybrid tech, but will it come to India? Check details

Hybrid vehicles have been gaining popularity in the global automotive market due to their blend of traditional combustion engines and electric power, offering environmental benefits and improved fuel efficiency. The latest addition to the hybrid vehicle segment is the Toyota Fortuner MHEV, which has been introduced in South Africa.

The Toyota Fortuner MHEV is a mild-hybrid version of the popular SUV, sharing its technology with the Hilux MHEV. This hybrid SUV is set to be launched in other markets following its debut in South Africa. With a 2.8-liter diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, the Fortuner MHEV delivers an extra 16hp and 42Nm of torque, totaling 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Toyota claims that the hybrid technology makes the Fortuner MHEV 5 percent more fuel-efficient than the standard diesel model.

Apart from the mild-hybrid system, the Fortuner MHEV also features the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite, a 360-degree camera, and minor interior upgrades. It comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and is offered in both 2WD and 4WD variants. While the Fortuner MHEV and Hilux MHEV are being introduced internationally, India continues to stick with the regular models.

However, Toyota is preparing to launch its first mass-market EV in India next year, in line with its commitment to sustainable mobility. The future introduction of Toyota’s diesel mild-hybrid technology in India remains uncertain, as the country’s lineup currently includes petrol, petrol-hybrid, petrol-CNG, and diesel models.

Overall, the Toyota Fortuner MHEV brings advanced hybrid technology to the SUV segment, offering improved performance and fuel efficiency while showcasing Toyota’s dedication to environmentally-friendly mobility options.
