Dwarka Expressway to open today: Traffic advisory lists roads to avoid

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Dwarka Expressway, India’s first elevated urban highway today, putting an end to a long wait for its completion. The event will also mark the laying of the foundation for several other projects, including the Urban Extension Road-II, Lucknow Ring Road, and the Kiratpur to Nerchowk section of NH-21, among 112 national highway projects, in Gurugram.

Gurugram Police has issued a traffic advisory urging commuters to avoid the Dwarka Clover Leaf route towards IMT until 4 pm and to use alternative routes. Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from using the Dwarka Expressway after 5 pm, with drivers advised to opt for the KMP route instead. The advisory outlines alternative routes for vehicles coming from different areas to reach the event venue seamlessly.

Delhi Traffic Police has also issued an advisory, warning commuters of traffic regulations in various areas of Dwarka and suggesting roads to avoid between Delhi and Gurugram. The Dwarka Expressway, also known as the Northern Peripheral Road, developed by NHAI, aims to ease travel between the two cities, reduce traffic congestion, and provide an alternate route to the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The 29-kilometer expressway connects Dwarka in Delhi to Gurugram in Haryana, starting at Shiv-Murti on NH-8 and ending near Kherki Daula Toll Plaza. Costing ₹9,000 crore to develop, the expressway utilized approximately 2 lakh metric tonnes of steel and around 20 lakh cubic meters of concrete. Its completion is expected to significantly impact transportation between the two cities and provide commuters with a much-needed alternative route to alleviate traffic congestion on existing highways.
